Toti spans a lot of ground. Along the beachfront and the lower Manzimtoti River valley the soil is sand and alluvium with a shallow water table. Behind that, the hills rise onto Karoo and Natal Group rock, typically Dwyka tillite and sandstone with dolerite, where water is held in fractures rather than in sand.
As a larger town, Amanzimtoti has everything from beachfront apartment blocks near Inyoni Rocks to family homes in Athlone Park and bigger hillside stands inland. That range means some owners need a simple garden wellpoint while others want a drilled borehole that can back up a whole household.
What Is Under Amanzimtoti
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Beach and dune sand | The seafront from Pipeline Beach past Inyoni Rocks and the streets just behind it | Easy to penetrate and often water bearing near surface, but loose. Screens and casing keep it open, and salt is the main quality risk. |
| Manzimtoti River alluvium | The flat ground along the lower river and around Ilanda Wilds | Layered sand, silt and clay. Can suit a wellpoint, though clay lenses and fine silt affect yield and screening. |
| Dwyka tillite and Natal Group sandstone | The inland hills and the higher suburbs above the town centre, with dolerite intrusions | Hard rock with fracture controlled water. Deeper holes and a survey make sense here because yields vary between neighbours. |

- Low ground and high ground behave differently. A beach or river flat stand may need only a wellpoint, while the hill suburbs usually require drilling into rock.
- Iron is the common complaint. Toti groundwater often carries iron that stains paving and clogs screens, so filtration is usually part of the plan.
- River flats flood. Headworks on low lying stands near the Manzimtoti River should be raised and sealed against stormwater.

What to Watch For Here
Floods have changed the river banks. The April 2022 floods scoured parts of the Manzimtoti River valley and damaged properties along its course. A borehole or wellpoint on low ground needs a raised, well sealed wellhead and a controller mounted above likely flood levels, and siting should avoid newly eroded banks. Stormwater from the hill suburbs also runs down to the valley, so the area around the wellhead should drain away from it.
Apartment blocks need the whole building on board. Many beachfront blocks in Toti are sectional title. A borehole for common garden irrigation or pool top up needs trustee approval, a clear agreement on who pays the electricity, and a plan for where the rig can stand without blocking residents' parking. It also helps to agree up front how the water will be shared if the block later adds more gardens.
What the Water Is Used For
- Watering common gardens at beachfront apartment complexes near Inyoni Rocks
- Irrigating lawns and vegetable beds at family homes in Athlone Park
- Standby water for toilets and laundry when the south coast supply is interrupted
- Topping up swimming pools on the larger hillside stands above town
- Washing boats, trailers and fishing gear after a day at sea
Wellpoint or Borehole?
Often, on the right ground. Beachfront stands and the flat land along the Manzimtoti River frequently have water close enough for a wellpoint, and it is a low cost way to water a garden. Up in the inland hill suburbs the sand gives way to rock, so a drilled borehole is usually needed. Near the sea, check salinity before relying on it.
Approval and Abstraction
Amanzimtoti falls under eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal requirements differ across KwaZulu-Natal. eThekwini is reported to require a borehole to be registered with the municipality once drilling is complete, and its Water By-law prohibits any connection between a borehole system and the municipal supply unless backflow is prevented. Msunduzi, KwaDukuza and Umdoni set their own requirements, so confirm the current position with the municipality before the rig arrives. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation, and draft national groundwater regulations published for comment in December 2025 may add obligations once finalised. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R400 - R1,000 /m | Loose sand drills fast but needs casing advanced as the hole goes down; any rock below is slower and sets the rest of the cost. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R400 - R700 /m | Sand that collapses needs casing and often a screen and gravel pack, which adds per-metre material near the sea. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R2,500 - R9,000 | Narrow beach streets, complex access and distance from base all move this; a site visit settles it. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R45,000 - R150,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for KwaZulu-Natal ranging from about R320/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than four to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Amanzimtoti Borehole FAQs
Wellpoint or borehole for a home in the hill suburbs?
Usually a borehole. The hill suburbs above the town sit on higher ground where the sand cover is thin and the water is in fractured rock below. A wellpoint relies on a shallow water table in sand, which is not typical there.
A survey helps pick a spot on the stand that is more likely to intersect a fracture. Results vary between neighbouring properties, so we do not promise depth or yield.
Why is my Toti borehole water staining everything orange?
That is iron, which is common in KwaZulu-Natal groundwater. It is dissolved when it comes out of the ground and turns to rust coloured particles once it meets air, marking walls, paving and pool surrounds.
An iron removal filter or oxidation and settling tank before the irrigation line usually solves it. Aiming sprinklers away from walls helps while treatment is planned.
Is it safe to drill near the Manzimtoti River?
It can be done, but low ground near the river carries flood risk and the shallow water can pick up whatever runs off the catchment. The borehole top must be sealed and raised, and the water tested for bacteria before any household use.
We also keep the rig and spoil well away from the riverbank so the work does not add to erosion.
Can I run my Toti borehole on solar?
Yes, and many owners do because pumps on a solar supply keep working through power interruptions. The pump has to be matched to the borehole yield and the head it pumps against, which is higher on the hill stands than near the beach.
Near the sea, panels, mounts and controllers should be specified for salt air, with stainless or coated fittings to resist corrosion.
