Borehole Drilling
Waterfall

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Waterfall

Waterfall lies on the upper highway between Hillcrest and Kloof, and its ground typically follows the same pattern: Natal Group sandstone on the higher ridges, underlain by Natal Metamorphic Province granite and gneiss. Where streams have cut down toward the valleys to the north the basement is closer to surface, and yields there depend almost entirely on fractures.

Many Waterfall properties are smallholdings or generous family stands rather than tight suburban plots, often with chickens, horses, vegetable gardens or small nurseries. Owners here tend to want a borehole that carries real outdoor demand, not just a lawn. That makes yield testing and honest pump sizing more important than on a typical garden-only job.

What Is Under Waterfall

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Natal Group sandstoneThe ridges along Inanda Road and toward KloofAbrasive and slow to drill. Fractures and bedding planes in the sandstone are the main water carriers.
Granite-gneiss basementBeneath the sandstone, and nearer surface down the slopes into the valleysTypically low-yielding crystalline rock. A hole that misses open fractures may be dry or very weak.
Dolerite dykes and deep weatheringScattered intrusions under a thick red soil coverDyke margins can concentrate water. The weathered cover is cased and grouted to keep surface runoff out.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Size the pump to the yield test so that livestock and irrigation demand do not overdraw a fracture-fed hole.
  • Split drinking and outdoor water because a household supply may need filtration that troughs and beds do not.
  • Consider more than one target on large plots, where a survey can rank two or three sites before the rig arrives.

Where We Work Around Waterfall

  • Forest Hills
  • Watercrest Mall precinct
  • Kloof boundary
  • Hillcrest boundary
  • Waterfall stands on the ridge toward Gillitts

What to Watch For Here

Agricultural use can take you outside Schedule 1. A few chickens and a vegetable patch are domestic, but a market garden, nursery or livestock operation selling produce is not. Larger or commercial abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation from DWS. Tell us how the water will be used so we can flag this before drilling.

Gravel roads and soft verges slow the rig. Access on many plots is along unsealed tracks that turn slippery in summer storms. A loaded rig and support truck need a firm route and space to turn. In the wet season it can be worth waiting a few dry days rather than risking ruts, damaged pipes or a stuck vehicle.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Watering poultry, goats and horses on Waterfall smallholdings
  • Irrigating vegetable gardens, tunnels and small nursery beds
  • Supplying the main house through Inanda Road area supply outages
  • Washing vehicles, equipment and paved yards without using metered water
  • Filling a fire-fighting tank on larger, heavily treed properties

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Not usually. Waterfall plots sit on weathered sandstone and granite where the water table is too deep for suction, and the clay-rich soil does not give up water freely to a point. Low, sandy ground right beside a stream is the exception worth checking. For livestock or household supply, a properly cased borehole is the dependable option.

Approval and Abstraction

Waterfall falls under eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal requirements differ across KwaZulu-Natal. eThekwini is reported to require a borehole to be registered with the municipality once drilling is complete, and its Water By-law prohibits any connection between a borehole system and the municipal supply unless backflow is prevented. Msunduzi, KwaDukuza and Umdoni set their own requirements, so confirm the current position with the municipality before the rig arrives. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation, and draft national groundwater regulations published for comment in December 2025 may add obligations once finalised. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR550 - R1,300 /mDeeper water tables on the ridges and hard sandstone or granite-gneiss push holes deeper and slower, which lifts the per-metre end.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mWeathered sandstone and decomposed granite near surface have to be cased; the thickness varies sharply across a single property.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR3,000 - R10,000Long driveways, steep stands and distance up the M13 corridor move this; a site visit settles it.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR70,000 - R210,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for KwaZulu-Natal ranging from about R320/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than four to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Waterfall Borehole FAQs

Will a Waterfall borehole supply livestock and a household?

It can, if the hole delivers enough. Fractured sandstone and granite give very different results from one spot to the next, so the yield test is the deciding step. Once we know the sustainable rate, we size the pump and storage to cover peak demand for animals and the house.

Where the yield is modest, a tank buffer and staggered irrigation usually cover the shortfall without overpumping. Float switches and a low-level cut-out protect the pump if the water level drops.

Is it worth drilling a second borehole on a large plot?

Sometimes, and only on good evidence. On bigger smallholdings, a second hole at a different fracture target can add supply or provide a backup if the first one weakens. The survey shows whether there is a separate, credible target worth the cost.

Two holes close together often tap the same fracture and simply compete, so spacing and geology matter more than the number. We will tell you if a second hole is unlikely to add anything.

Do I need to register a borehole used for a smallholding business?

Possibly, depending on scale. Reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1 of the National Water Act, but abstraction for commercial farming, a nursery or a similar enterprise may need registration or a water use authorisation from DWS.

eThekwini also requires boreholes to be registered once drilling is complete. Rules change, so confirm the current position with both the municipality and DWS before drilling.

Why do my drip lines keep clogging?

Iron is common in KwaZulu-Natal groundwater, and when it meets air it turns into an orange sludge that blocks emitters and filters. Iron bacteria, which thrive in warm water, can make the problem worse through the humid summer months.

A water test shows the iron and manganese levels. Aeration and an iron filter ahead of the irrigation system, plus regular flushing, usually keep drip lines running.
