Malvern and its neighbours usually sit on Ecca Group shale and siltstone with sandstone bands, cut by dolerite. The shale weathers to a heavy clay near the surface. Groundwater collects in fractures, especially along dolerite margins, and the water tends to be harder and more mineralised than on the sandstone further inland.
Much of Malvern, Bellair and Hillary is older housing on compact stands, often on sloping streets with retaining walls, narrow side passages and closely spaced neighbours. The Umbilo River valley runs past Bellair and Rossburgh. On these properties, simply finding a spot the rig can reach is often the deciding factor.
What Is Under Malvern
| Formation | Where it sits | What it means for drilling |
|---|---|---|
| Ecca Group shale and siltstone | The main bedrock under Malvern, Bellair and Hillary | Soft to moderately hard and quick to drill, but tight. Water comes from fractures, so yields are typically modest. |
| Weathered shale clay | The upper layer on most stands, thicker on gentle slopes | Sticky and prone to swelling. It is cased off so it cannot collapse into the hole or cloud the water. |
| Dolerite intrusions | Sills and dykes in the Karoo rock across the area | Very hard in the core, but the cracked rock along the contact is where a hole is most likely to find useful water. |

- Small stands limit where the hole can go so access often dictates the site as much as geology does.
- Hard water leaves scale on taps, glass, kettles and pool tiles unless it is tested and treated.
- A modest yield and a tank work well together for garden watering and outage backup on a typical Malvern property.

What to Watch For Here
Tight access is the norm, not the exception. Many Malvern and Hillary homes have narrow driveways, carports, steps and retaining walls between the street and the back garden. A full-size rig may not fit, so a compact rig or a front-garden site is often used. Measuring gate width and checking overhead cables before booking avoids a wasted day.
Pool water and hard borehole water need care. Water drawn from Karoo shale can be high in calcium, magnesium and other salts. Fed straight into a pool, it can raise hardness and total dissolved solids, causing cloudy water and scale on tiles. Testing first lets you decide whether to top up with it directly, blend it, or treat it.
What the Water Is Used For
- Watering compact front and back gardens on Malvern streets
- Topping up the pool after testing for hardness and dissolved salts
- Backup water for flushing toilets during supply interruptions
- Washing paving and outside areas on small Hillary and Bellair stands
- Watering potted plants and small vegetable beds with tested water
Wellpoint or Borehole?
Probably not. Malvern's shale breaks down into clay, not sand, so there is little permeable shallow material for a wellpoint to draw from, and the water table is generally beyond suction depth. A small patch of sandy alluvium near the Umbilo River might be an exception. For most homes, a compact drilled borehole is the more realistic choice.
Approval and Abstraction
Malvern falls under eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal requirements differ across KwaZulu-Natal. eThekwini is reported to require a borehole to be registered with the municipality once drilling is complete, and its Water By-law prohibits any connection between a borehole system and the municipal supply unless backflow is prevented. Msunduzi, KwaDukuza and Umdoni set their own requirements, so confirm the current position with the municipality before the rig arrives. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation, and draft national groundwater regulations published for comment in December 2025 may add obligations once finalised. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area
Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.
| Item | Indicative range | What moves it locally |
|---|---|---|
| Drilling, per metre | R450 - R1,150 /m | Weathered shale drills easily; fresh dolerite is very hard and slow. Whether your hole meets a dolerite sill largely decides the total. |
| uPVC casing, installed, per metre | R400 - R700 /m | Shale weathers to clay that swells and squeezes, so the upper hole is cased through the weathered zone. |
| Mobilisation and site establishment | R2,500 - R9,000 | Small stands, tight access and distance from base move this; a site visit settles it. |
| Water survey | R5,000 - R12,000 | Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent. |
| Yield testing | R3,500 - R15,000 | Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on. |
| Pump, supplied and installed | R15,000 - R45,000 | Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable. |
| Storage and booster | R12,000 - R35,000 | Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate. |
| Typical complete project | R55,000 - R180,000+ | Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis. |
These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.
Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for KwaZulu-Natal ranging from about R320/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than four to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.
Malvern Borehole FAQs
Is my Malvern stand big enough for a borehole?
Most are. The borehole itself is only a narrow hole and a small headworks; the challenge is getting the rig to the spot. We check gate and passage widths, slope and overhead obstacles, and can often drill in the front garden or use a compact rig.
If space is extremely tight, we will discuss options honestly at the site visit rather than book a rig that cannot fit. Sometimes moving a section of fence or a gate is the simplest fix.
Why is there white scale on my taps from borehole water?
Water from Karoo shale often carries dissolved calcium and magnesium, which leave hard white deposits when the water evaporates or is heated. It is not usually harmful, but it marks glass, taps, shower screens and kettles.
A water test confirms the hardness level. A softener or suitable filter can reduce scaling if you plan to use the water inside the house.
Can I use borehole water in my pool?
Often, yes, after testing. Hard or mineralised water can raise calcium hardness and total dissolved solids, making the pool cloudy and harder to keep balanced. Iron, if present, can also leave brown stains on the walls and steps.
Knowing the water chemistry lets you or your pool service adjust the dosing, blend with rainwater, or add filtration before topping up regularly with borehole water.
What happens to the mud and water from drilling?
Drilling brings up rock chips, clay and water. On a small stand with close neighbours and sloping ground, we contain it in a sump or bags on your property so it does not flow onto the pavement or into the stormwater drain.
After drilling, the spoil is cleaned up or levelled where you prefer. We discuss this during the quote so there are no surprises.
