Borehole Drilling
New Germany

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › New Germany

New Germany typically sits on Natal Group sandstone and Dwyka tillite, with dolerite running through both. The ground is broadly similar to neighbouring Pinetown, but the mix shifts from street to street, so the drilling depth, the length of casing and the eventual yield can vary noticeably between neighbouring stands.

The suburb has two sides. Quiet residential streets with family homes and modest gardens sit close to a busy industrial area of factories and distribution sites. A borehole for a house is about garden water and outage backup, while one for a factory is about dependable volume, so we design each one for its own job.

What Is Under New Germany

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Dwyka tilliteUnder parts of the residential streets and the industrial area, depending on the exact standWeathers to a clay layer that must be cased off. The fresh rock drills evenly but often yields modestly, which suits storage-based household use.
Natal Group sandstoneUnder other parts of the suburb, particularly towards the higher groundTough drilling through quartz-rich rock. Fracture zones in the sandstone tend to give the better yields and softer water.
DoleriteDykes and sills crossing the area, sometimes traced by a line of different soil or vegetationThe broken rock along a dolerite contact is often the best target, while the solid dolerite itself is slow to penetrate.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Neighbouring stands can behave differently because the boundary between tillite and sandstone does not follow property lines.
  • Household needs are usually well within reach for a sensibly sited hole feeding a tank, even where yields are modest.
  • Industrial users should plan for a yield test before committing a process line or wash bay to groundwater.

What to Watch For Here

Drilling is loud, and neighbours are close. On residential streets, a rig and compressor run for a day or more. We work normal daytime hours, keep spoil and drilling water contained on your property, and suggest a word with neighbours beforehand. A tidy, considerate job matters more on a close-knit street than on a large rural plot with no one nearby.

Iron is the most common complaint. Groundwater in this part of KwaZulu-Natal often carries dissolved iron and sometimes manganese. It looks clear from the tap but turns orange on paving, walls and irrigation heads once exposed to air. Testing before the plumbing goes in tells you whether a filter belongs in the system.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Watering family gardens and vegetable beds on New Germany stands
  • Supplying wash bays and yard cleaning in the industrial area
  • Keeping toilets flushing when eThekwini supply is interrupted
  • Topping up a home pool in the dry winter season
  • Washing delivery vehicles at distribution sites near the M19

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Seldom. New Germany is rock country with a clayey weathered layer on top, and the water table on most stands is too deep for a wellpoint pump to lift from. A low-lying stand near a stream with genuine sandy alluvium is the only likely exception. For the rest of the suburb, a drilled borehole is the sensible choice.

Approval and Abstraction

New Germany falls under eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal requirements differ across KwaZulu-Natal. eThekwini is reported to require a borehole to be registered with the municipality once drilling is complete, and its Water By-law prohibits any connection between a borehole system and the municipal supply unless backflow is prevented. Msunduzi, KwaDukuza and Umdoni set their own requirements, so confirm the current position with the municipality before the rig arrives. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation, and draft national groundwater regulations published for comment in December 2025 may add obligations once finalised. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR500 - R1,200 /mFresh Natal Group sandstone and dolerite are hard and wear bits; tillite drills more steadily. The mix your hole meets decides where the rate lands.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mCasing covers the weathered top and any clayey tillite. In hard sandstone the cased length is often short.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR2,500 - R9,000Slopes, gorge-side stands and access through older suburbs move this; a site visit settles it.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR60,000 - R190,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for KwaZulu-Natal ranging from about R320/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than four to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

New Germany Borehole FAQs

How long does drilling take on a New Germany stand?

A typical residential hole here is usually drilled in a day, sometimes running into a second day if fresh sandstone or dolerite slows progress. Casing, development and clean-up follow, and the pump installation can often be done shortly after.

Hard rock, a deep water strike or difficult access can extend the timeline. We give a realistic estimate after the site visit rather than a fixed promise.

Will a factory borehole affect my neighbours' boreholes?

It can, if a high-volume hole draws from the same fracture system as nearby domestic boreholes. Fractured-rock aquifers are connected along joints and faults, and heavy pumping can lower water levels in holes that share them.

A yield test with monitoring is the responsible way to set a sustainable pumping rate for industrial use. It also supports any registration or authorisation needed for commercial abstraction.

Do I need to remove the iron from the water?

Only if it causes a problem for your use. For lawn irrigation away from paving, some iron may be tolerable. For pool top-up, white walls or household use, it usually needs filtering out before it stains surfaces or clogs fittings.

A laboratory test gives the actual iron and manganese levels, and the filter can be sized from that. Regular backwashing keeps it working, and we can explain the upkeep involved.

Will the pump still work during a power cut?

Not on its own. A standard submersible pump needs mains power, so during an outage it stops just when the municipal water may also be off. Many New Germany households solve this with a storage tank that fills while power is available, plus a small pressure pump on a battery or inverter.

A solar borehole pump is another option where the stand gets good sun. We can compare the running costs and what each setup would supply.
