Borehole Drilling
Hillcrest

5-Star Reviewed
Home › Areas We Cover › Hillcrest

Under Hillcrest the ground typically changes as you move west. Natal Group sandstone caps much of the higher land around the village, while toward Assagay and the valleys the older granite and gneiss basement comes closer to surface. Both are fractured-rock aquifers, so a successful hole depends on finding open joints rather than simply drilling deeper.

Hillcrest mixes an established village along Old Main Road, newer security estates and complexes, and equestrian smallholdings toward Summerveld and Assagay. Each brings its own constraints: estate architectural and HOA rules, shared boundaries in complexes, and long access tracks on rural plots. Water interruptions in the outer west are the most common reason owners call us.

What Is Under Hillcrest

FormationWhere it sitsWhat it means for drilling
Natal Group sandstoneHigher ground around the village, Hillcrest Park and the ridges toward GillittsSlow, abrasive drilling in fresh rock. Joints and bedding fractures carry soft water that can be slightly acidic.
Granite and gneiss basementLower slopes toward Assagay, Summerveld and the valleys to the west and southLow typical yields, roughly 0.1 to 0.5 l/s on regional DWS mapping, improving where the hole intersects a fault or fracture zone.
Dolerite and weathered overburdenDykes cutting both rock types, under a red clayey soil coverCasing seals off the soft overburden. The fractured edges of a dyke are a favoured target, though fresh dolerite drills hard.

What That Means for Your Borehole

  • Survey before you commit because the sandstone to granite transition can shift the best target within a few hundred metres.
  • Estate approval takes time so start the HOA or body corporate process while the quote is being prepared.
  • Treat the water as soft and check its pH, because slightly acidic water can corrode copper and steel fittings over time.

What to Watch For Here

Estate rules can be stricter than the municipality. Many Hillcrest estates control contractor hours, vehicle weights, noise and where equipment may stand. Some ask for a method statement, proof of insurance and a deposit against damage to roads or verges. Getting written HOA consent before booking the rig avoids a crew being turned away at the gate on the morning of the job.

Equestrian properties need a cleaner water plan. Stables, manure heaps and wash bays concentrate nitrates and bacteria near the surface. On horse properties around Summerveld and Assagay, the hole should be sited away from these and the headworks sealed and raised. A water test before horses or people drink it is good practice, especially in the first season.

What the Water Is Used For

  • Running a household on stored water during Hillcrest supply interruptions
  • Supplying stables, troughs and wash bays on Summerveld horse properties
  • Irrigating estate gardens within the limits set by HOA water rules
  • Topping up pools once the drier winter months have passed
  • Feeding a solar-filled tank for a garden cottage or flatlet

Wellpoint or Borehole?

Very seldom. Hillcrest stands are underlain by weathered rock and clay, not loose saturated sand, and the water table is generally too deep for a driven point. The only places worth a look are flat sections beside a stream on some smallholdings, and even there yields are small. Plan on a drilled borehole.

Approval and Abstraction

Hillcrest falls under eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality. Municipal requirements differ across KwaZulu-Natal. eThekwini is reported to require a borehole to be registered with the municipality once drilling is complete, and its Water By-law prohibits any connection between a borehole system and the municipal supply unless backflow is prevented. Msunduzi, KwaDukuza and Umdoni set their own requirements, so confirm the current position with the municipality before the rig arrives. Separately, the National Water Act governs how much you may abstract: reasonable domestic use generally falls under Schedule 1, and in 2026 the Department of Water and Sanitation confirmed that households using borehole water for reasonable, non-commercial domestic purposes do not need to register nationally. Commercial, agricultural and larger abstraction may need registration or a water use authorisation, and draft national groundwater regulations published for comment in December 2025 may add obligations once finalised. Rules change, so confirm the current position before drilling.

Borehole Prices in This Area

Drilling is charged per metre, so depth drives the total. The ranges below are framed for local ground conditions and access.

ItemIndicative rangeWhat moves it locally
Drilling, per metreR550 - R1,300 /mDeeper water tables on the ridges and hard sandstone or granite-gneiss push holes deeper and slower, which lifts the per-metre end.
uPVC casing, installed, per metreR400 - R700 /mWeathered sandstone and decomposed granite near surface have to be cased; the thickness varies sharply across a single property.
Mobilisation and site establishmentR3,000 - R10,000Long driveways, steep stands and distance up the M13 corridor move this; a site visit settles it.
Water surveyR5,000 - R12,000Targets structure rather than depth. Worth most where yield is fracture-dependent.
Yield testingR3,500 - R15,000Establishes the sustainable rate that pump selection depends on.
Pump, supplied and installedR15,000 - R45,000Greater depth means more head, which means a larger pump and heavier cable.
Storage and boosterR12,000 - R35,000Needed wherever peak demand exceeds the borehole's sustainable rate.
Typical complete projectR70,000 - R210,000+Everything above, excluding treatment, which depends entirely on the water analysis.

These are indicative ranges, not a quotation. They are compiled from published South African supplier and contractor pricing to give you a starting point for budgeting. They are not our rate card, and no figure here is a commitment.

Treat them as a broad guide only. Published borehole pricing in South Africa varies enormously - 2026 guides quote per-metre drilling rates for KwaZulu-Natal ranging from about R320/m to R1,500/m, a spread of more than four to one - because depth, geology, access, specification, distance and fuel costs all move the number. Depth in particular is not known until the hole is finished. Figures generally exclude VAT unless noted, and change over time. Only an itemised written quote against your actual site means anything.

Hillcrest Borehole FAQs

Do I need permission from my Hillcrest estate before drilling?

In most estates, yes. The municipal step is registration once the hole is drilled, but HOA and body corporate rules are a separate private layer. They often cover where a borehole may be placed, working hours, screening of tanks and pump noise.

We can supply a site plan, method statement and insurance details for the application, which usually speeds up the estate's decision. Remember that the finished borehole still has to be registered with eThekwini.

How much storage should I pair with a borehole for outages?

It depends on household size and the tested yield. A common approach is to hold two or three days of normal household use in tanks, filled steadily by the borehole pump, so that even a slow hole can keep up through a long interruption.

The yield test shows how fast the hole can be pumped without drawing it down too far, and the tank size is matched to that figure rather than to a rule of thumb.

Why does upper highway borehole water taste flat or stain fittings?

Water from sandstone and granite here is usually soft and low in minerals, which can taste flat, and it may be slightly acidic. Acidic water slowly attacks copper and galvanised fittings, and dissolved iron can leave orange marks on paving and basins.

A lab test for pH, iron and manganese shows which applies. Neutralising filters or iron removal can then be specified for the actual water instead of guessed, which avoids paying for equipment you do not need.

How long is the rig on site in Hillcrest?

Most residential holes are drilled within a day or two, though harder sandstone, a deeper target or a hole that needs extra casing can extend that. Rain on clay driveways and restricted estate working hours can also stretch the programme.

Installing the pump, cabling and tank usually follows the yield test as a separate visit, once the water level and sustainable rate are known and the equipment can be sized properly.
